Taganrog is the second-large city in Rostov region, as well as port on the Sea of Azov. Taganrog has been haven an honorary title "City of Military Glory" since 2011.
On September 12, 1698 the decree was issued about harbor and fortress construction on Tagan Horn. This day is considered to be the date of foundation of the city which was called originally as Troitsk on Tagan-Rog.
Taganrog is the first Russian city which has been constructed according to prefabricated master plan. And the city harbor is the first harbor in the world constructed in the high sea.
Taganrog today is not only a large port, but also the largest industrial center of the South Russia. Some large enterprises work in the city. Service and tourism are also due in no small part to city economy.
Taganrog is famous also for the great writer and dramaturge Anton P. Chekhov has been born here.
